Red Barn Event - Deconstruction and Reuse with Waste Loop

This is a FREE event with a donation basket at the door.
Doors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm.

As a part of their commitment to the community, Waste Loop is excited to announce the launch of a new reuse center right here in our valley. Join us for this Red Barn Event to learn from experts in this growing industry, as well as opportunities to get involved in Waste Loop's reuse center opening soon in Cashmere!

Have you ever finished a remodel and been astounded with how much waste was generated in the process? The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 230 million to 600 million tons of construction and demolition waste are produced nationwide each year in the United States. Fortunately, there are increasingly more options to source high quality used building materials that have been sourced from the deconstruction of other buildings. Waste Loop is proud to present on the critical issue of current building practices and showcase the transformative impact of deconstruction services and reuse facilities on waste reduction. Discover the rise of reuse facilities as integral players in creating a sustainable construction ecosystem, breathing new life into materials that would otherwise contribute to landfills. Waste Loop strives to create a closed-loop system that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency.

Red Barn Event - Alpine Rising

Streaming link: https://youtube.com/live/mYkBTKUWj_E?feature=share

Join WRI and Mountaineers Books author Bernadette McDonald as she tells the rarely mentioned accounts of the local climbers to the world's tallest and most challenging peaks.

This is a FREE event with a donation basket at the door.
Doors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm.

Alpine Rising: Sherpas, Baltis, and the Triumph of Local Climbers in the Greater Ranges

The name of Maurice Herzog, the first man to reach the summit of Annapurna, is widely recognized, but how many know Ang Tharkay, the Sherpa who carried the seriously frostbitten Herzog on his back for miles? Although rarely mentioned in published accounts of early expeditions, local climbers have long been significant members of first ascents on the world’s tallest and most challenging peaks. In Alpine Rising, award-winning writer Bernadette McDonald sets the record straight by shining a light on these too often forgotten heroes. Now, in the 21st century, it is often local climbers who are setting records. A Nepali team was the first to climb K2 in winter; they reached the summit while singing their national anthem. Pakistani climbers like Little Karim and Ali Sadpara devoted their lives to helping others survive and succeed on and off the mountains and their stories deserve to be celebrated. Written with unprecedented access to climbers and their families, and assisted by researchers on-the-ground in Pakistan and Nepal, Alpine Rising will forever change the way readers see the history and legacy of mountaineering in the Greater Ranges.

BERNADETTE MCDONALD was the founding Vice President of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre and director of the Banff Mountain Festivals for 20 years, and few people have the relationships that McDonald does with the world’s most accomplished alpinists. The author of more than a dozen books about mountaineering and mountain culture, she regularly lectures on a variety of topics for universities, festivals, and alpine clubs. McDonald lives in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

Science on Tap with Chris Sheridan

This event is hosted at Ground Control in Wenatchee.

Come join Wenatchee River Institute for Science On Tap! This casual, free event is a great opportunity to gather, socialize, and learn about an exciting science topic from a member of our community. No prior science knowledge necessary! Speakers will give a talk on their latest research or a science topic they are passionate about, with some time afterwards for discussion or Q&A. Presentations start at 7pm – arrive early to grab a drink and get a seat!

Presentation: Duffy Meadows - Development of a Stage Zero Riparian Restoration Project

Description: What is a stage zero riparian system? Duffy Creek in Douglas County is a great example. Our presenter, Chris Sheridan, will walk us through the historic and current departed riparian conditions in the upper reaches of this area. We'll hear a summary of stage zero restoration concepts and details on the development of the restoration plan for Duffy Creek, while considering the issues impacting implementation of this plan. After the talk, a group discussion will follow to address the applicability and pros & cons of this restoration technique.

Presenter: Chris Sheridan received his Master's in Forest Ecology from Oregon State University in 2000, where his thesis analyzed amphibian and plant communities in zero-order riparian systems in the Coast Range of Oregon. Chris has been a practicing restoration ecologist for over 20 years, and has led the Fisheries, Aquatics, and Restoration programs for BLM's Spokane District since 2010. His accomplishments include completing over 10 aquatic and riparian restoration and habitat improvement projects while working for BLM and for Dept. of Transportation.

Film: Advice For Girls

Grab your favorite ski buddies and join us at Colchuck Consignment in Cashmere, WA for a screening of Advice for Girls!

“Advice for Girls” puts a spotlight on the collective experience of women in the ski industry. The film showcases advice from three generations of women in skiing. Each generation reminds women and girls of all ages that they are worthy of success, allowed to take up space, and are extremely valuable to the ski industry.

With an intersectional cast featuring all types of women – women of color, queer women, women with disabilities, and more – the crew hopes that everyone can find someone in the film to connect to.

“My hope is that the film will help girls skip over some of the limiting beliefs imposed upon past generations of skiers and inspire them to show up as their truest selves,” says producer and athlete Addy Jacobsend. Featuring an all-female cast and crew, Advice for Girls is a must-see ski film for any skiing enthusiast.
